In this first session, you will be introduce to the content of this class trough different references and example.
You will start to see, touch and understand a library of technical materials. Following physical examples, you will also make the experience of a first simple circuit using this element.
To start, what a better thing than a short history and a discussion about electronic textile.
Today, prototyping connected garments have been made possible by a range of innovative materials. This material (fabric, non woven, thread…) are most of the time not create in purpose for fashion design but more for technical aims. We find a lot of this material in the aviation research or for military use. Because this material are good or bad conducteur it allows use to create sensor and circuit entire in textile. This way of process will help us to integrate more and more technology into everyday life and to imagine new uses or interfaces.
Now we will discover a range of material that we will use in our class this semester.
Every year since 2011 (except 2012) happened the eTextile summercamp, in the frame of this event participants contribute to the swatchbook exchange. It’s compilation of knowledge and technics in the field of the eTextile. Every sample are super interesting to explore and understand it can give you a lot of idea for creation.
This website will be our platform to document and share our research and experimentation in this class. But we will try also to leave physical documentation like swatch book exchange that we see above.
